My name is Matthew Martin and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in April 2002 when I was 16 years old and studying for exams in high school. My life took a turn for the worse at this point with many hospital and emergency room visits, more illnesses and a cocktail of mental health problems.
I have never had my diabetes under control and I am not proud to admit that. I think a mix of teenage denial and wanting to fit in drove me away from the test strips and needles and towards the alcohol and the sugary foods. I’m now 31 and simply put – something has to change. I’m terrified that I’ve messed up my body in a big way by neglecting my own health and this blog is intended to be a record of my journey as a ‘born again’ diabetic.
Why ‘Diabetes or Death’? Isn’t that a bit morbid?
I chose that name on purpose. Sadly, diabetes does kill people, and I am also going down that road unless I change my life. This is a personal blog and so I wanted the title to be striking and fear inducing. I am facing an ultimatum – deal with my diabetes or die. It really is that simple!
I hope you enjoy reading my blog and if you would like to contact me for any reason, please feel free to drop me a comment!
